The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section realignment committee came out of its six-hour long first meeting recently with a number of league-change proposals for the school year 2018-19. Least of which was not the suggestion that Whitney High be moved into the Sierra Foothill League. It was suggested that with Nevada Union’s declining enrollment, the Tri-County Conference might be a better fit for the Miners. That would take the Grass Valley school out of the Division I SFL conference and put them in Division III. As a replacement, Whitney became the obvious choice. “They obviously looked at us and said that we would be a good fit in the SFL,” said Whitney Athletic Director Jason Feuerbach, following the Wildcats win over Granite Bay in boys basketball last week. “And if that ends up the plan that gets approved by that committee and we end up going there; we look forward to the challenge.” Nevada Union now has at least 100 students fewer than Whitney and Feuerbach said he and his staff anticipated a potential league shift several years ago. With that possibility, Feuerbach and the Wildcats sports programs began preparing in earnest. “We kind of saw it coming and so our goal was to build a solid foundation in all of our sports,” said Feuerbach. “So bring in high-quality coaches and really focus on, not only training the kids in the techniques and in the offseason, but incorporating all the other components – character education and community service.” Whitney and Rocklin high schools established the Quarry Games a few years ago and Whitney has shown they match up well with the Thunder. The sister schools have traded victories in virtually all sports and draw huge crowds whenever they play each other. Whitney has also made strong showings in the playoffs and came within a touchdown of beating eventual state champion Del Oro last year. This season, Whitney girls volleyball took the section championship. Feuerbach said he was not sure how the scheduling of the Quarry Games would be affected if the Wildcats do end up in the SFL. However, the games could go from playing for bragging rights to potential league championships. “We’re excited to be in the conversation, as a school that’s growing and getting better and working hard,” said Feuerbach. “That’s all you can ask is for the CIF to look at you and say you’re doing a good job over there and the kids are working hard and they’re successful. And we need to respect that and honor that so it’s an exciting time for us.” There are four more scheduled meetings of the realignment committee; two in January, and one in both February and March. The next meeting, which is also open to the public, is scheduled for Jan. 12.
