Just when it seemed the Whitney High boys basketball team had the Capital Valley Conference well in hand, Roseville caught the Wildcats in a shooting slump and handed the ‘Cats a 71-57 setback Tuesday. Whitney shot 31 percent from the floor and not any better from long range. Youki Arai and Matt Willis combined for 6-of-9 shooting from behind the 3-poing arc, but otherwise the ball just would not fall. Meanwhile, the Tigers found the home court to their liking and improved to 3-1 in the CVC, just a half game behind the Wildcats and Cosumnes Oaks. Four teams, to include Ponderosa (3-1), are within striking distance of the conference banner. Antelope (2-2) has been quietly moving up into contention as well. Whitney will invade the Titans campus Jan. 27. In the interim, the Wolfpack bangs heads with Antelope this Friday and heads for Ponderosa a week from Friday. Roseville hosts Bella Vista (1-3) Friday and welcomes the Bruins Tuesday. Last week, Whitney put a big stamp on the end of a four-game week by beating Cosumnes Oaks 70-66 in the Golden 1 Center Saturday. That victory put the Wildcats at the top of the standings at 4-0 and dropped the ‘Pack to 3-1. A week ago Friday, Whitney had to travel to Del Campo for their third game of the week. The ‘Cats defeated the Cougars 68-53 and then returned home to try and rest up for the Cosumnes Oaks meeting. It should be pointed out that the Wolfpack also completed a four-game week. The ‘Pack defeated Roseville 53-50 Friday night and had beaten Del Campo and Oakmont earlier in the week. Whitney 54, Ponderosa 50 After falling behind 43-29 through three quarters, the Bruins put up a furious fourth-quarter battle to outscore the Wildcats 21-11 down the stretch. However, it was not enough as the ‘Cats picked up their second CVC victory. Jashon Lewis stepped up with 18 points and 11 rebounds; nine Whitney players scored in the game. The Wildcats hit seven 3-point shots, shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc.
