WHITNEY’S FRANCO MEDALS AT STATE TRACK MEET
Running in the California State Track and Field meet at Buchanan High School’s Veteran Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Whitney High’s Andrew Franco broke Wildcats’ records in both the 200-meter and 400-meter events to make it onto the state medal awards podium.
In the preliminaries Friday, the junior beat his own record of 21.79 by turning in a time of 21.51 seconds in the 200m. It was good enough for sixth place and advanced him into the finals.
Saturday, Franco’s 21.51 time would have given him fifth place, but his time of 21.55 was good enough for sixth place. That earned him a state medal and a spot on top of the medals podium.
In the 400m, Franco was fourth in the preliminaries blazing to a time of 47.82. The Wildcats’ speedster took almost one half second off of his previous best time.
In the finals on Saturday, Franco was unable to match his personal record in the 400m and finished seventh. Had he been able to repeat his preliminary performance he would have finished sixth for another medal.
“He ran awesome and proved himself one of the top long sprinters in the state of California,” said Whitney head coach Mark Snow.
Two of the runners who finished ahead of Franco in the 200m were seniors and there were three seniors ahead of him in the 400m. The Wildcats’ dash master could well find himself on the medals podium again in 2018.
