Coming off their bye week, the Whitney High football team is coming off a disappointing 1-2 preseason and ready to make a run for the Capital Valley Conference championship.

THIS WEEK

The Wildcats visit Bella Vista Friday, a team that is 0-3 and lost two games 56-0. The Broncos lost to El Camino 47-26.

One could say this is a game made to order for Whitney to help the ‘Cats get back on the winning track. However, it should be noted that the Wildcats defeated Davis 50-28 in their season opener, but then fell in their next two games. It’s a good bet head coach Jesse Armas will not be looking at the score, but at how well Whitney plays.

Defensively, the ‘Cats should have little difficulty stopping Bella Vista’s offense. The Broncos have less than 300 total yards in three games and has thrown seven interceptions.

Offensively, the game could help Whitney sharpen its execution. The dynamic offense introduced by former coach Paul Doherty has stalled the last two games. After scoring 50 points against Davis Aug. 25, the Wildcats have averaged just 16 points in the past two contests.

“Opportunities don’t bring success right away, but opportunities do bring more opportunities in terms that we need to learn from (them),” Armas said after Whitney’s Quarry Bowl loss. “We have a really good team, that’s never been a question, but we need to learn to finish games and do the little things down the stretch that great teams do.”

If Whitney sets aside pregame statistics and concentrates on execution, the Bella Vista game could be what the Wildcats need to get back to winning.
