After a disappointing 2-1 start in the preseason, the Whitney High football team threw down the gauntlet in the Capital Valley Conference by blasting the Broncos 54-0 at Bella Vista Friday. Senior wide receiver Justin Kraft, who had been somewhat quiet during the preseason, came alive for three touchdowns in the first quarter. Quarterback Preston Eklund hit Kraft for TD passes of 35, 14 and 6 yards. Eklund’s scoring strikes to Kraft came on the heels of Jason Sanchez’s 1-yard scoring run a couple minutes into the game. At the end of one period of play Whitney led 27-0. After Sanchez upped the score 34-0 to start the second quarter, Wildcats head coach Jesse Armas inserted junior Robert Jones at quarterback. “We have absolute positive energy every single week going into every game,” Jones said after Whitney’s loss to Rocklin in the Quarry Bowl. “We shouldn’t lose to anybody. We’ve just got to get better.” It appears that has happened with the ‘Cats coming off their bye week of practice. Against the Broncos, Jones responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Michael Hamp late in the second quarter. In the second half, Armas went to backup quarterback Tyler Murray. But the Wildcats weren’t just about offense. The defense held the Broncos to just 78 yards of offense – 39 passing and 39 rushing. The defense picked off two Bella Vista passes and recovered a fumble. THIS WEEK If Bella Vista was not much of a test for Whitney, Del Campo will be. The Wildcats hit the road again to take on DC’s Cats in Cougar Canyon. Del Campo is 4-0, allowing just 20 points in four games. At 1-0 in the CVC, Whitney is tied with Antelope, Cosumnes Oaks and the Cougars. If the Wildcats can get by Del Campo, they won’t have to play the Wolfpack or Titans until the end of the season. Game time at Del Campo is listed as 7:15 p.m.
