As has become the custom, the Whitney High boys and girls varsity cross-country teams will advance to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships Saturday at Willow Hill in Folsom. Following the leadership of Ethan Dodge, the boys placed fifth in Division II subsection’s 3-mile event at Frogtown, Angels Camp last weekend. Dodge stepped across the finish line in 16 minutes, 11.8 seconds for 16th place. Adding to the Wildcats’ 156-point total was Austin Vasquez (21st, 16:21.9), Josh Kling (32nd, 16:42.0), Austin Shields (34th, 16:44.4) and Jordan Knoblock (53rd, 17:13.4). The sixth athlete to finish was Brenden Jacoby in 17:36.5 for 72nd place. The Whitney girls came in seventh to qualify, led by Kirsten Ransford’s 19:42.2 for the 25th spot. Staying within 30 places of Ransford were Avery Lambrite (39th, 20:10.5), Rachel Payan (40th, 20:10.6), Brooke Giori (43rd, 20:19.2) and Jessica Becker (55th, 20:47.9). Filling in the remaining positions were Meghan Townsley (63rd, 21:00.3) and Emily Manzer (74th, 21:45.9). JV Boys/Girls – 3 Miles The Wildcats’ girls team ran within 10 spots of one another and qualified for sections by placing fourth with 82 points in the Division I-II race. Olivia Stauffer (11th, 21:27.7), Hannah Gottenberg (15th, 21:48.0), Gabriela Romero (16th, 21:49.2), Mikayla Barkve (19th, 21:56.3) and Vanessa Vasquez (21st, 21:59.8) filled in the team total. Runners Melanie Walsh (29th, 23:01.8) and Olivia Simmons (38th, 23:38.6) did an excellent job of pushing the team into the top five. For the JV boys, Evan Riscucci (48th, 18:15.4), Lucas Castro (61st, 18:40.4), Ben Murphy (62nd, 18:41.0), Austin Willems (70th, 18:50.6), Chanakya Sharma (120th, 20:35.4) and Alex Eickmann (138th, 21:18.0) ran well as a team, but failed to qualify for sections. Soph Boys – 2.2 Miles Making it exciting, the Wildcats finished sixth to qualify for sections, nosing out Tokay by three points, 188-191. Adam Beard led the ‘Cats in 17th place stepping off a 12:07.2. Aidan Redding (28th, 12;21.2) followed, along with Jacob Harbert (31st, 12:25.5), Brandon Valdez (55th, 12:55. 1) and Connor Hedman (57th, 12:57.4) Joining the group were Logun De La Mora (77th, 13:17.9) and Sam Hernandez (79th, 13:20.1). Frosh/Soph Girls – 2.2 Miles All seven Whitney runners kept in touch with a spread of 34 positions to take third and easily qualify for sections. Emily Peterson (14:33.9) and Hailey Bedrin (14:35.4) both finish in the top 20, coming in 17 and 18 respectively. Grace Pierce broke the plane in 14:44.7 for 22nd place and Sarah Davis (34th, 15:00.8) and Payton Diamond (38th, 15:08.2) followed. Pushing the top five were Emily Skoken (49th, 15:31.6) and Hannah Lee (51st, 15:33.7). Frosh Boys – 2.2 Miles Whitney let Bella Vista know they aren’t the only frontrunners in the area, by beating the Broncos 49-72 for the No. 1 spot. Malachai Amore (11:48.5), Byron Chadwick (11:55.2) and Tyler Hawkins (11:57.2) came in fourth, fifth and sixth, and Jason Finta (14th, 12:38.3), and Aidan Ransford (20th, 12:51.5) put the cap on the team’s total. Hayden Erkenbrecher (33rd, 13:21.2) and Max Sommerhauser (66th, 14:07.7) held down the final two spots.
