After dropping an 80-59 decision to Clovis North in the Sasha Brown Memorial Classic championship, the Whitney High girls basketball team traveled to Yuba City to work over River Valley 71-50. The Wildcats’ Jada Lewis burned the Falcons for 22 points, hitting 46 percent from the floor. The Junior was 3-of-9 from beyond the arc and 7-7 from the free-throw line. The ‘Cats had 10 3-pointers in the contest, but shot only 43 percent from the charity stripe. Zoya Mirza and Emily Brustman combined for 24 points and Makenzie Macfarlane added another 10. The backboards belonged to Whitney, garnering 42 to River Valley’s 21. Freshman Lauren Bernard and Brustman had eight rebounds apiece, Macfarlane six and Lewis five. The Falcons did hold a decided edge in turnovers. Although the Wildcats are not at the top of the Capital Valley Conference preseason standings, that will likely change when league play starts. Lewis is the CVC’s top gun in scoring, putting up more than 18 a game. Lewis also leads in 3-point shooting and senior sidekick Kailee McCarrick is No. 5. McCarrick did not play against River Valley. Although Lewis leads in many categories, Whitney prides itself on being a full-team force. Just behind Lewis in scoring is McCarrick and Brustman is just a couple of grabs away in rebounding. McCarrick also shares the spotlight with Lewis in assists. CVC competition won’t begin for Whitney until Jan. 5, when the ‘Cats travel to Del Campo. Meanwhile, they will be competing in the West Coast Jamboree following their annual Quarry Classic, which was scheduled for Tuesday in Rocklin. Although thoughts are often on Whitney entering the Sierra Foothill League next season, the CVC will not be a cakewalk. Roseville and Antelope have looked strong in preseason and the CVC is guaranteed only three automatic bids to the playoffs. “I would being doing a disservice to my team to worry about what the future is going to hold. Especially going into next year, missing Kailee (McCarrick) is going to be huge for us, but we’ll still have a really strong core group,” said Whitney head coach Sydney Gatson. “We have a great JV team this year. We have the pieces to compete for the next year or so and trying to get these young girls ready by the time they make varsity as well.”
