The Whitney High boys broke out of playing .500 soccer and handed Rocklin its first loss of the season, 3-2, Saturday in the Quarry Classic at Rocklin High. The cross-town rivals finished the first half tied 1-1. But the ‘Cats got the upper hand scoring two goals in the second period for the victory. “I think we can be pretty good. It’s one of those things as they get to know each other a little bit,” said Whitney head coach Joel Williams. “They have the potential to be very good. They’re not going to be the type of club that’s just going to show up and expect to win.” Williams’ remarks came after his club scored its third tie of the season playing against Woodcreek Tuesday. The Wildcats are now 1-0-3 in preseason play. Against the Thunder, seniors Nate Sherwood and Brandon Sterri each had a goal and sophomore Miguel Saavedra also scored. Providing assists were juniors Brian Plasencia and Andrew Duffey. Rocklin entered the contest with a 4-0-2 record in preseason. Other than junior goalkeepers Merrick Cole and Matteo Ognissanti, the Thunder squad is made up of nine seniors and nine sophomores. “Going into the season, Justin (da Cunha) and I were expecting them to start off a little bit slower just so they could catch up to the speed of the game,” said co-head coach J.J. Barnette. “But the boys have really done a good job of listening to what our expectations are, doing the things that we ask, but also playing with confidence and making the right decisions all on their own.” Justin da Cunha is co-head coach along with Barnette. Scoring for Rocklin was senior Camden Murphy and sophomore Sam Tarzi. Cole and Ognissanti each played a half in goal. Rocklin will play at Vista del Lago (2-0-1) Thursday and finish up preseason hosting El Camino (0-4) Dec. 20. Sierra Foothill League play is set to open with the Thunder entertaining Folsom (7-0) Jan. 2 and Granite Bay Jan. 4. Whitney played Woodcreek Tuesday (2-2 tie) and will play Folsom Friday, before opening Capital Valley Conference play at Bella Vista Dec. 19.
