Coming off a narrow loss to Capital Valley Conference-leading Ponderosa, the Whitney girls soccer team rolled over Oakmont 7-0 Friday in Rocklin. Junior Kiera Utush accounted for three goals, and one each was scored by Sarah Scott, Rachel Zufelt, Amber Swenson and Laney Paduveris. Swensen and Paduveris are also juniors. Head coach Ana Jones said the Wildcats’ were not trying to run up the score, but wanted her players to play their best, like in any other game. Oakmont’s coach complimented the ‘Cats on how well they played. Laila Begic was credited with two assists, and Utush and Zufelt each had one as well. Whitney had 66 steals in the match, Utush garnered nine and Darian Louthan had eight. Both Sydney Johnson and Maddie Cortez spent 40 minutes apiece goaltending; the duo combined for three saves. Ponderosa 2, Whitney 1 Played in Bruins’ country, the Wildcats shut out the CVC leaders in the second half, but could not make up the one-point advantage Ponderosa held after the first half. The Bruins scored on a couple free kicks. One found the back of the net when the defense was not positioned correctly. The second came on a ricochet put back. “Nothing really that could help that,” Jones said about the second goal. “Second half, we just couldn’t get the ball in the net. It was like shot after shot after shot. We just could not put the ball in the net, but we shut them down.” Freshman Lexi Cavarra scored the ‘Cats lone goal and the Bruins goalkeeper made eight saves in the match. Johnson gathered in six saves for Whitney. The Wildcats took 13 shots, compared to the Bruins’ six. This week was back-to-back games at Roseville and Cosumnes Oaks. They tied each other 1-1 and have yet to play Ponderosa. “First thing, we can’t panic. We have to play our best game,” said Jones, as to playing the Tigers and Wolfpack. “We have a good team. We are a good defensive line. We just need to be mentally prepared.”
