The Whitney High girls basketball program proved worthy of their No. 3 seeding in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Playoffs by winning big in their opener. The Wildcats opened at home against No. 14 Rodriguez Tuesday night and sent the Mustangs back to Fairfield with a stunning 78-31 loss. Over the last two regular-season games, the ‘Cats won by margins of 45 and 50 points and appear to show no signs of slowing down in the playoffs. Against Rodriguez, Jada Lewis scored 28 points. She rained in four 3-point shots; shot 58 percent from the floor and 78 percent inside the arc, and just for good measure, pulled down 11 of the Wildcats’ 38 rebounds. But in spite of her output, her effort was a prime example of how selflessly Whitney plays. In their last regular-season 80-30 win over Ponderosa, Kailee McCarrick was high point with 22. In their second to last regular-season 81-36 victory at Bella Vista, Makenzie Macfarlane held high-point honors with 17. There virtually is no one on the Wildcats’ roster who won’t step up when called upon. “They want a league title and they want a section title. That’s what their goal is and that’s what we’re going to do,” said Whitney girls basketball head coach Sydney Gatson before the start of the season. “What’s cool about these girls is they don’t feel entitled. To get to a section title they know they’re going to have to work and they know that pretty much every game is going to be a battle.” Although the Wildcats were unable to win the Capital Valley Conference title outright, they did claim a share of it. However, there is no sharing a section championship and evidence indicates the ‘Cats are well aware of it. Rodriguez, like Whitney shared a league championship going 8-2 in the Monticello Empire League. Vanden visits Thursday as the No. 6 seed and Solano Country Athletic League champion. The Vikings come in with a record identical to the Wildcats at 21-7 and they have a couple high-scoring seniors in Myli Martinez and Deirdra Huff. However, Whitney’s teamwork has proven to be second to none.
