he Whitney High track and field team was scheduled to host the first Capital Valley Conference Meet Tuesday; it was postponed to Monday because of inclement weather. The CVC early-season team frontrunners are Whitney, Cosumnes Oaks, Bella Vista and Ponderosa. The Wildcats’ boys squad has a good chance of claiming the 200 meters, 3200m, shot put, discus and pole vault. The Wolfpack holds the No. 1 spot in the 100m, 400m, 300m hurdles, 4x400 relay and long jump. The Broncos could be hot on their heels with top athletes in the 800m, 1600m, 110 hurdles and triple jump. The Bruins come in as favorites in the 4x100 relay and high jump. Whitney’s Andrew Franco holds a solid 22.69-second time in the 200m. Teammate Julian Templeton ranks third, a little more than a second behind Franco; both are seniors. Sophomore Ethan Dodge is a good bet in the 3200 and is currently on top with a time of 10:02.15. He is followed closely by fellow ‘Cats Josh Kling and Austin Vasquez. Senior Dagne Buck has a throw of 47-feet-1 ½- inches in the shot put to lead the CVC by more than two feet. Whitney’s Zachary Boroja could place as well. Boroja, a senior, was an odds-on favorite in the discus. His hurl of 148-8 is yards ahead of the pack. Teammates Buck and Xzavier Caldwell could pick up points as well. Adam O’Brien had a pretty good grip on the pole vault. The senior’s leap of 14 feet is pretty solid. GIRLS Whitney’s best chance for gold is in the pole vault, where Rachel Payan is deadlocked with Oakmont’s Robyn Price at 10 feet. Freshman Isabel Simmons has cleared 9-6 and could garner hardware as well. Payan is just two inches behind the top effort of 5-2 in the high jump. Although Cosumnes Oaks’ Markayla Billings is well ahead in the discus, the Wildcats’ Abigail Scott and Annabel Su are solid bets for second and third. The maroon-and-gold could pick up some points in the two relays, as well. Kirsten Ransford, Brooke Giorgi and Avery Lambrite could all score in the distance events. Ransford, a freshman, has the CVC’s second best time in the 3200m. Lambrite, a senior, could get podium time in the 800m. Hot on the heels of Wolfpack sophomore Josalynn Bennett in the 100m is Whitney’s Sydney Johnson. The freshman’s time of 13.13 seconds is about 4/10ths of a second behind Bennett. Friday, the Wildcats will head for Auburn and the Le Febvre Relays at Placer High. Saturday is the Dublin Distance Fiesta at Dublin High in the East Bay.
