Roseville managed to stay on top in the Capital Valley Conference boys volleyball standings by handing Whitney its first league loss of the season 3-2 April 3. However, Whitney came back the following night and roughed up Cosumnes Oaks 3-0. Against the Tigers of Roseville, the Wildcats took the first set 25-19, but lost the next two. Refusing to go down in four, Whitney pulled out the fourth set 26-24. “Roseville is a tough team; they’re defending champions. They can hurt you in a number of ways; they’re very solid,” said Whitney first-year varsity head coach Brian Ball. “We played them tough right down to the end.” The Tigers pulled out a 15-11 victory in the rubber set. Whitney 3, Cosumnes Oaks 0 After winning the first two sets, Nico Saboonchi turned in seven kills (unofficial), as Whitney dominated the third set for a 25-17 victory. Ball was able to clear his bench. Devin Saboonchi had three kills and two blocks. SET 2 Cosumnes Oaks fought to stage a comeback, but the ‘Cats put the clamps on every attempted rally. “It helps to have a very athletic team and they’re confident, and that helps,” Ball said. “It makes my job easier.” After taking an 11-10 lead, Whitney went on a 10-2 run. The visitors narrowed the score to 23-17, but Whitney pulled away for a 25-19 win. SET 1 The Wolfpack got off to a good start, but by mid-set the ‘Cats began to pull away for a 25-10 victory. Nico Saboonchi and Zane Groat combined for seven kills and Groat also supplied a block to turn back the ‘Pack. Ball credited setter Daniel Sharrah for his vision in spotting openings and outside hitter Nico Saboonchi. “It’s nice to have a (6-foot-7-inch) left-handed setter. He sees everything and he knows the game really well and he takes advantage when the opportunity presents itself,” said Ball. “And one of our outsides, Nico (Saboonchi) can jump out of the gym.” A non-conference match against River Valley was scheduled for Thursday at Whitney.
