The Whitney High Athletic Department held a signing day ceremony at Whitney High School recently, where 13 senior Wildcats’ athletes were recognized. Among the signees, three are from the Wildcats’ football team: Nick Eaton, Justin Kraft, and Jonathan Scott. Eaton will play football at Division I FCS University of California, Davis in Davis. FCS stands for Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as NCAA Division I-AA. The 2017 Sacramento Bee All-Metro selection played outside linebacker and wide receiver, finishing with 143 total tackles, 21 for losses and 16 ½ sacks. On offense, Eaton had 41 receptions, 479 receiving yards and five touchdowns in three varsity seasons. “I was very excited at the ceremony to see all my friends, family and coaches there who’ve supported me since the beginning,” said Eaton. Eaton had offers from Army, Air Force and Sacramento State as well, but UCD made his decision an easy one. “Throughout the whole recruiting process, the (UCD) coaching staff was the most interested and the best fit by far,” said Eaton. “On top of that, the education I’ll get there is hard to beat.” Eaton was undecided as to his major. Joining Eaton at UCD will be Wildcats teammate Justin Kraft. The wide receiver and two-time Cal-Hi Sports All-State nominee finished with 174 catches for 2,902 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns in three varsity seasons. “The signing ceremony was awesome,” said Kraft. “All of the support from family and friends made it a very special day that I can appreciate for the rest of my life.” With offers from Hawaii, Air Force and California State University, Sacramento, Kraft chose UCD’s academic reputation. “It was a relief knowing I’m going to one of the top academic public schools in the nation,” said Kraft. “On top of that, I get to play football.” Kraft was also undecided on his major. Lastly, Jonathan Scott will play football for Division III Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. Scott started on the defensive line for the Wildcats’ last season and played in the Optimist All-Star Football Classic in January. He finished with 23 total tackles, 3 ½ tackles for losses and 2 ½ sacks last season. “It was very exciting knowing I was committing to play college football and just knowing I have a plan for the future,” said Scott. Scott plans on majoring in business administration.
