Woodcreek High took the first set of their girls volleyball match at Whitney, but the Wildcats rallied for a 3-1 victory Wednesday. The Timberwolves’ Alyssa Lovell controlled the net in the first set, but finished the night with just three kills and three blocks. After coming back to take set two, the Wildcats simply took over. The T’Wolves began to show fatigue, after battling Del Oro through five sets the night before. “(Woodcreek) is a very tough team. They had a really tough five-set match last night against Del Oro, so we’re not taking a whole lot out of this. They had tired legs, but they scrapped,” said Whitney head coach Jeff LaShell. “We shook up the lineup in game two and I think the girls responded really well. I think the girls played just a really good match after that.” LaShell said his 2018 club has very good chemistry, but coined it as a relaxed chemistry. He said they do not go into every match with the intensity he would like to see, but said shaking up the lineup had the effect he was looking for. In the fourth and final set, Whitney went out to a 6-0 lead and continued to build on it. Sophomore Maddy Miller hammered home three kills and two aces; Kaylie Honberger, Raley Gillmore and Ana Mora turned in several blocks, as the Wildcats cruised to an easy 25-12 victory. Set 3 Woodcreek battled, but when they reached 14 points they hit the wall. Whitney’s Cate Morris, Sydney Lukanich, Uriah Villa and Honberger began forcing the Timberwolves into making errors that gave the ‘Cats an easy 25-14 win. “I think coming off of a really tough match last night, we need endurance. It’s kind of been our crutch,” said Woodcreek head coach Brian Jew. “We are trying to overcome that; we have a big week this week. We’ve got another match tomorrow starting league, so I think it’s just a learning experience for this team.” Jew said his team is young. The T’Wolves’ roster features eight juniors, five seniors and a sophomore. Whitney enters the Sierra Foothill League this season, virtually trading place with Woodcreek, which enters the Capital Valley Conference. Jew said his club is not familiar with the CVC, but said the Timberwolves are looking forward to the new challenges. Set 2 Whitney took the second set 25-19, sparked by Honberger’s four service aces in a row. Statistically, the ‘Cats had 51 total kills, the T’Wolves 38; Whitney served up 13 aces, Woodcreek three. Blocks were 10-5 Wildcats and the Timberwolves had 17 errors on serves received, Whitney had three. Whitney’s Ana Mora had 32 assists and Woodcreek’s Arlie Trevino recorded 28. Whitney has a tournament and three road matches before returning to host Ponderosa Sept. 11. SFL play begins Sept. 13 at Del Oro.
