WHITNEY BLAZES TO SFL GOLF CROWN

When a golf team has four of the top six golfers in the league, there’s a good chance that a championship season is in the works. That was the story through the Sierra Foothill League golf campaign this season for the Whitney boys links team as the Wildcats capped a superlative first year in the SFL by capturing the league crown this week. “We had four of the top six golfers in the league and that’s tough to beat,” said Whitney coach Jesse Armas about the Wildcats. “The kids did a really good job this season.” Whitney, which went undefeated in SFL dual matches and won both league tournaments, posted a 383 Monday at Lincoln Hills to outdistance second-place Granite Bay’s 399 tally for the title. Oak Ridge (400) finished third while Del Oro (420) was fourth. The field was rounded out by Rocklin (441) and Folsom (456). For the Wildcats, junior Sam Sommerhauser shot a blistering 5-under-par 67 to lead the win. He was followed in by CJ Gassner (73), Will Phelan (74), Zach Pollo (76) and Espen Sterri (93). Sommerhauser earned the league MVP honor and was joined on the All-League team by Gassner, Phelan and Pollo. The Wildcats will play in the CIF Division I tournament Monday at Timber Creek in Roseville.
