WHITNEY GOLFERS QUALIFY FOR FIRST NORCAL REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

Whitney’s dream golf season was extended Monday afternoon after the Wildcats placed second as a team in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament. Playing at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, the Wildcats, who entered the tournament following last week’s CIF Division I championship win, finished with a team score of 379, one stroke behind Jesuit’s winning 378 total. A week ago at the D-I tourney at Timber Creek in Roseville, it was the Wildcats’ 372 score which held off the Marauders’ 374 total for the Section title. “Monday was a very special day for our men's golf program,” said Whitney coach Jessie Armas about the Wildcats qualifying for their first ever NorCal tournament. “Overall, I am really proud of the way the players have bought into the role each of them have towards the team,.” said Armas. “They go out, know what they have to do and do it. It's very fun to watch as a coach.” Whitney’s effort Monday was led by sophomore Will Phelan, who was the only golfer to break 70 on the day. Phelan finished with a 3-under-par 69 to earn individual Section Masters championship honors. Zach Pello was also impressive for the Wildcats with an even-par 72. Other Whitney scoring came from Sam Sommerhauser (75), freshman CJ Gassner (77), and Johnny Guest (86). Espen Sterri had a non-scoring 92. The second-place finish by Whitney qualified the Wildcats, along with Jesuit and third-place finishing Davis Sr., to next Monday’s CIF Northern California Regional tournament, which will be played at El Macero Country Club in Davis. Granite Bay’s 395 score was for fifth place, three shots behind Oak Ridge’s fourth-place tally of 392. Granite Bay’s Dylan McDermott fired a 70 for the Grizzlies and will advance to Monday’s NorCal tourney as an individual. Other Granite Bay results included TJ Patterson (75), Derrick Dollesin (80), Connor Sweeney (82), Easton Holland (88) and Bradley Olson (89). Other area finishers included Woodcreek’s Josh Cervantes (79), Hudson Solters (75) and Kyle Wesolowski (80) of Del Oro, Sid Brown of Placer (82), Arturo Zavala of Roseville (83), Valley Christian’s Matthew Schimutzu (85), Rocklin’s Robbie McClain (92) and Del Oro’s Blake Berger (94). The top three teams and the top nine individuals at Monday’s NorCal Regional will advance to the CIF State Championship tournament set for Wednesday, May 29, at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach.
