SOMMERHAUSER, MCDERMOTT SHOOT UNDER PAR AT STATE TOURNAMENT
A pair of local prep golfers had impressive rounds on the links at the CIF State Boys High School Championship Wednesday.
Whitney junior Sam Sommerhauser and Granite Bay sophomore Dylan McDermott each shot under par at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach.
“Personally, I loved the course,” said Sommerhauser, who is a verbal commit to University of Arizona. “You have to hit it straighter than most courses because there’s a bunch of trees, but that’s one of my strengths. I was able to hit it pretty straight off the tee, so overall, it was pretty good.”
Despite a double bogey on No. 10, the Whitney junior settled in and finished with three straight birdies to close out his day with a 2-under-par 69. His score was good enough to tie for eighth place overall.
“It was really special. As far as golf goes, it was the first time any (Whitney) golfer has been on the state stage,” said Sommerhauser’s coach Jesse Armas. “I think it was more nerve-wracking for me as a coach. Maybe he had some jitters early. He had to scramble for par on a par-5. After that, he really settled in. He told me he was happy with how he finished the round.”
Up next for Sommerhauser is the Western Junior National Tournament June 17–20 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. The Western Junior is the oldest junior tourney in the United States. It features the top junior golfers from more than 40 states and internationally and has served as a career springboard to the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, to name a few.
McDermott, meanwhile, finished tied for 11th. Birdies on holes 2, 8 and 17 led to a 1-under-par 70 for the Grizzlies’ sophomore.
McDermott placed third overall at the CIF NorCal tournament to qualify for State after shooting a 3-under-par 69 at El Macero Country Club in Davis.
Luke Parker of La Costa Canyon was the individual State Champion, shooting a 7-under-par 64. Jesuit’s Chase Sienkiewicz, who will be teammates with Sommerhauser at Arizona in a couple years, finished tied for sixth with a 68. Sac-Joaquin Section representatives Ryan Meyer of Oakdale and Jacob Westberg of Inderkum also finished inside the Top 10.
La Costa Canyon took the team championship as well, shooting a collective 3-under-par. Locally, Jesuit finished third. Sienkiewicz led the Marauders and was followed in by Josh Wiegandt (71), Brady Siravo (73), Jack Deaner (76) and Keaton Sutherland (78). Ryan Parry had a non-scoring 83 for Jesuit.
