OVERTIME THRILLER A MAJOR CHECK MARK FOR WHITNEY AGAINST DEL ORO

Senior Dom Spence had a major impact in all facets of Friday's 30-27 overtime victory, helping Whitney get its first Sierra Foothill League win and its first win over Del Oro in program history. Spence, who was removed from last year’s contest with Del Oro after suffering a concussion, had been waiting for the rematch with the Golden Eagles all season. “I know he circled this game on the schedule as a game that he wanted to make big plays,” said Whitney head coach Zac McNally. And make big plays, he did. Spence had big kickoff returns, various toe-tap catches to extend drives and big runs throughout regulation. But his biggest plays of the night came in overtime. With Del Oro marching, Spence batted down a Golden Eagle pass on third down, forcing Del Oro to kick a field goal rather than go for a touchdown. That opened a door for the Wildcats to go for the win on the next possession. Two plays into the Whitney drive, Spence took a fly sweep to the left from 14 yards and dove into the end zone for the game-winning score. “He made so many big plays for us in all phases,” said McNally. “He’s someone we look for when the game is on the line.” Eli Brickhandler rushed for a TD and connected with Nick Miller on two scoring passes, including a 40-yarder to tie the game at 24 in crunch time and send the game into overtime. Aiden Foster had an 11-yard rushing touchdown as well as a 30-yard fumble recovery for a score to lead Del Oro (4-2), who has a bye next week. Whitney (3-3), meanwhile, heads to Granite Bay next Friday.
