WILDCAT SOPHOMORE ERUPTS IN PLAYOFF OPENER
The top-seeded Whitney boys soccer team came out with a disclaimer of sorts Tuesday afternoon.
After a 11-2-3 regular season campaign, Whitney earned the No. 1 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II bracket. With a season-high eight goals Tuesday, the Wildcats put the rest of the D-II field on notice.
Sophomore Brayden Goularte scored a varsity career-high four goals with an assist to lead Whitney past No. 16 West 8-0. Miguel Saavedra chipped in two goals and an assist while Nyden Reed and Robbie Mora-Arias also had goals for the Wildcats. Kyle Reilly had a pair of assists while Jake Kirkland and Andrew VandenAkker split the shutout in goal.
West had defeated Oakmont 2-0 Monday for the right to play Whitney. Oakmont ends its season at 5-11-1.
The eight goals by Whitney Tuesday are the most in a game since an 11-0 win over Casa Roble in 2015 and the most ever in a playoff game for the Wildcats. Whitney advanced to host No. 8 Granite Bay Thursday.
The Grizzlies took down No. 9 Laguna Creek 2-1 Tuesday with an overtime goal that broke a 1-1 tie. Whitney defeated Granite Bay in each of the previous two Sierra Foothill League contests this season.
