WHITNEY BOYS, DEL ORO GIRLS BALL OUT AT GOLDEN 1 CENTER
Del Oro and Whitney’s JV and varsity boys and girls basketball teams got a rare treat Friday with the chance to play a league game at Golden 1 Center.
The Whitney boys have been here before. Just four years ago, Nick French’s Wildcats won their most recent Sac-Joaquin Section championship with a 60-38 with over Beyer of Modesto. At 21-4, French’s 2020 bunch is looking for a return trip.
“It’s gonna take a lot of kids buying into how we do things playing as a team, playing 18 guys deep,” French said after Friday’s 69-37 Sierra Foothill League win over Del Oro on the home court of the Sacramento Kings.
Eleven Wildcats shared a balanced score sheet for Whitney’s fourth SFL win against two losses with just four games remaining. Ryan King and Carson Bennett each had 10 points, Dom Spence and Boston Graf each had nine, and Carsten Schulz and Callan Ferreira each posted seven to lead the Wildcats, who quickly got over the butterflies of playing in a big arena.
“It was huge nerves because, of course, it’s bigger,” said Spence. “You see it on TV all the time, so you think, ‘I’ve got to come out and play my best.’ But it really just turned into every other game. We played how we play, and we eventually got the dub.”
Del Oro’s JD Duley scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second quarter to bring the Golden Eagles back from a nine-point first-quarter deficit. Del Oro trailed by just two at halftime. French was visibly upset with his team in the second quarter for missing open layups. But his team responded with a huge third-quarter resurgence.
