he boys varsity cross-country teams from both Rocklin and Whitney high schools will compete at the CIF State Cross-Country Meet Nov. 26 at Woodward Park in Clovis. This past Saturday, all the top cross-country programs from the section converged on Willow Hills Reservoir in Folsom for the Sac-Joaquin Section Cross-Country Championships. The Whitney Wildcats placed second as a team in Division II behind section champions Bella Vista and the Rocklin Thunder finished third. Only the top three teams advance to State. Logan Dodge led the Wildcats by placing fifth overall with a time of 16:23 over a hilly and very challenging 5K course. Freshman Ethan Dodge was second for the ‘Cats and 12th overall in a time of 16:50. Josh Kling (22nd, 17:03), Austin Shields (27th, 17:10), and freshman Brenden Jacoby (28th, 17:11) completed the scoring for Whitney. Freshmen Josh Tajiri (32nd, 17:27) and Austin Vasquez (39th, 17:35) displaced many scorers from other teams, as Whitney’s sixth and seventh runners crossed the line before most teams’ fifth runner, boosting Whitney's result. Rocklin overcame warm temperatures and a tough course to grab the third and final spot for a state meet berth. Andrew Craft paved the way for the Thunder by finishing eigth overall in 16:39. James Murphy (20th, 17:00), Bennett Woodward (21st, 17:03), Justin Ferraro (24th, 17:08) and Andrei Matei (34th, 17:29) rounded out Rocklin’s top five. Justin Johnson (17:57) and Brendan Dowling (19:15) completed the team. Both Whitney and Rocklin fought off challenges by perennial state meet contenders Del Campo and Granite Bay, which finished fourth and fifth respectively. Logan Dodge and Ethan Dodge from Whitney, and Andrew Craft from Rocklin each earned All-CIF honors for placing individually in the top 14. The varsity girls teams from both Whitney and Rocklin were missing runners due to illness. The Lady Wildcats placed fourth, with Avery Lambrite crossing the line in 19th overall in a time of 20:18. Savannah Hill (25th, 20:33), Jocelyn Brelsford (33rd, 20:51), Haven Lambrite (47th, 21:37), Livi Stauffer (52nd, 22:00) and Meghan Townsley (66th, 23:00) completed the scoring. The Lady Thunder finished sixth as a team, with Alyssa Tremblay leading the way in 22nd place overall with a time of 20:22. Emma Bickford (35th, 21:12), Pearl Burton (37th, 21:16), Marie Navarro (54th, 22:04), Jourdan Henson (63rd, 22:35), Desiree Burton (70th, 23:50), and Sarah Kharaka (72nd, 24:01) rounded out the team for Rocklin. Whitney JV Girls placed sixth, led by Hannah Gottenberg in sixth place overall (22:03). Rocklin was second in the sophomore boys race, led by a dominant 1-2 finish by Shane Burton and Trevor Asbury, 11:31 and 11:32 respectively, over the 3,400 meter course). Whitney’s frosh-soph girls placed fifth as a team. Rachel Payan crossed the line in eighth place (14:24) to lead the ‘Cats. Rocklin’s freshmen boys placed fourth, with Keaton Murphy (12:07), Jacob Polivka (12:26) and Daniel McElhinney (12:28) finishing in the top 10.
