It seems every time the Whitney High girls volleyball team advances toward a championship they have to go through Sacramento’s St. Francis – perhaps the third time will have the same charm as the other two. In winning the Super 8 Tournament, the Wildcats saw double in having to beat both the St. Francis Troubadours and the St. Francis Lancers of Mountain View to claim the golden volleyball trophy. After reaching the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals the ‘Cats had to silence the Troubadours’ music once again. The No. 6 seed for the Northern California Regional Division II Playoffs, St. Francis topped Windsor 25-20, 25-12 and 25-22 Wednesday. The Jaguars of Windsor came in with a 19-7 record and lost 3-0 to eventual champion Campolindo in the North Coast Section semifinal. “(St. Francis is) a great team and I’m sure they’re going to bring it against us,” said Whitney head coach Jeff LaShell. “I think it's going to be a great match between a couple of very athletic, very powerful, very determined teams.” Whitney will host the Troubadours at 7 p.m. Saturday. Wednesday, the No. 3 seed Wildcats opened the regional tournament defeating No. 14 American 3-0. Although Whitney started slowly, the ‘Cats rallied to defeat the Fremont school 25-17, 25-15 and 25-15. LaShell said the Wildcats did not adjust to the Eagles’ attacks until about midway through the first set. He said the team was passing poorly and the lights did not go on until the match reached the 16-16 mark. “We ended the first set 25-17 on the strength of Kaitlin Bullock serves and Macey Hayden offense,” LaShell said. “Kaitlin Bullock from the service line was really fantastic. She created separation every time she stepped back there and I cannot emphasize how important that is.” Bullock also tallied six aces on 27 serves. Hayden turned in 14 kills, Bullock six and freshman Kendall Gimenez four. “Kendall showed great composure and maturity tonight. She's a smart player and has really played well when called upon,” said Coach LaShell. Cammie Good set up her hitters with 26 assists; the senior had four digs and 10 serves. Ashley Williams had 11 serves and eight each were added by Ellie Basquez, Aubrey Miller and Hayden. Hayden received 14 American serves, Bullock nine and Basquez eight. The team committed just five errors. Basquez led the ‘Cats with 15 digs and Hayden had 11.
